Five Coaches of Goods Train Derail in Bengal, No One Injured

This morning, five coaches of a loaded goods train derailed near Kumedpur station in West Bengal’s Malda district, causing significant disruptions to rail traffic. The incident, which occurred at approximately 10:45 am, affected the main line of the Katihar division, with the train, identified as DN IORG/BTPN/LD 70649, blocking the track entirely.

Northeast Frontier Railway’s Quick Response

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) swiftly responded to the derailment. Chief Public Relations Officer Sabyasachi De confirmed that, despite the severity of the incident, no injuries were reported. “A total of five wagons derailed, and no one was injured,” De assured, emphasizing the safety of passengers and railway staff.

An Accident Relief Train (ART) was immediately dispatched from Katihar, and efforts to restore the track began promptly. One passenger train, which was stranded due to the derailment, was safely returned to Katihar station and will continue its journey once the track is cleared.

Possible Engineering Issue Behind the Derailment

Speculation has arisen regarding the cause of the derailment. A senior railway official hinted that an engineering issue related to the track might have contributed to the accident. However, this is yet to be confirmed. “The exact cause of the incident is under investigation, and a high-level inquiry has been ordered to uncover the precise reasons,” said Katihar Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Surendra Kumar.

Kumar further added, “Five tankers of the petrol-laden goods train derailed near Kumedpur railway station, disrupting rail traffic between New Jalpaiguri and Katihar. The down line has since been cleared for rail traffic, and restoration of the up line is currently underway.”

Impact on Rail Services

The derailment has caused significant delays and disruptions in the region, particularly affecting the rail route between New Jalpaiguri and Katihar. While the down line has been cleared, restoration work on the up line is ongoing. The NFR is working tirelessly to resume normal services, and passengers are advised to monitor official channels for updates on train schedules.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of rigorous track maintenance and safety checks to prevent such occurrences. As the inquiry progresses, the NFR remains committed to ensuring the safety and reliability of its rail operations.
