Navi Mumbai: Woman Loses Legs After Falling on Tracks at CBD Belapur Railway Station
A tragic accident occurred on a Monday morning at CBD Belapur Railway Station in Navi Mumbai, resulting in a young woman losing her legs. The victim, identified as 20-year-old Rohini Rajesh Bote from Taloja, was waiting on platform number 3 when she suddenly felt dizzy and fell onto the tracks just before the Panvel-Thane train approached.
The Incident
According to police inspector Pravin Padvi from Panvel Government Railway Police, the train driver applied brakes immediately, but unfortunately, one coach had already run over her. “Two Railway Police Force (RPF) staff members who were present at the scene quickly responded to rescue her. The motorman reversed the train, and the RPF personnel managed to pull her out from beneath the train. Both her legs had been severed in the accident,” said Padvi. Bote was swiftly admitted to MGM Hospital in CBD Belapur for further treatment.
Circumstances Leading to the Accident
In her statement to the police, Bote mentioned that she suddenly felt dizzy and lost her balance, causing her to fall off the platform. She had just finished her work as a house help in CBD Belapur and was on her way home when the incident happened at around 10:03 AM. Normally, she would travel by bus, but due to the heavy rains that morning, she decided to take the train to Kharghar and then a shared auto-rickshaw to Taloja.
Questions and Investigation
The police are still unclear about why Bote was standing on platform number 3, where the Panvel-Thane train arrives, despite intending to go to Kharghar. “In the CCTV footage, the face is not clear, making it difficult to determine whether she fell accidentally or jumped onto the tracks,” an RPF official stated. The priority was to save Bote and ensure she received medical attention immediately. Further investigation is being conducted by the Government Railway Police (GRP).
Reflection and Concerns
This unfortunate incident raises several concerns about passenger safety and the adequacy of emergency response measures at railway stations. While the quick action of the RPF staff is commendable, the incident underscores the need for increased vigilance and safety protocols to prevent such accidents in the future.
Conclusion
The Belapur train accident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers present in daily commutes and the importance of robust safety measures at railway stations. As authorities continue to investigate the exact cause of the accident, the focus remains on supporting Bote through her recovery and ensuring that similar incidents are prevented in the future.
